Waste Processing and Disposal
Solid waste management "end points" in a School are usually a combination of the following:
- Composting of organic wastes (in the school yard or outside)
- Sale (or donation) of collected recyclables
- Disposal of mixed waste on dumps or landfills
- Burning of mixed waste (in the school yard or outside)
Where wastes that go to disposal or burning are handed over by the School to municipal services, the School’s direct responsibility ends at the School compound’s gate. However, in many places such services are not available or not reliable, and the School is obliged to care for disposal or burning by itself or by hiring private workforce or contractors.
