Types of Waste
and what to do with them
What is in the waste?
What types of wastes do you have to deal with in your school?
The composition of wastes in a school differ from place to place; they reflect many factors like the local economic situation, environmental awareness, and cultural aspects. They may also vary with the season of the year.
The percentages of different waste types given for the green dustbin above is only an example of a situation that could be found at a school. You have to find out your situation your self.
The best way to start a solid waste management improvement program in your School is to conduct a complete inventory or analysis of the waste produced in the School, also called a Waste Audit. This can be the first step of getting science teachers and students interested and involved in solid waste management activities. The results will help you to assess the potential for the 3 Rs and will form the basis of your action plan. In particular, you will have a basis to decide for which types of waste it makes sense to promote waste segregation and organize a separate collection.
