Waste Collection and Storage
The most visible element of a good solid waste management in a School are the waste containers. These should be easily accessible, clean, of sufficient quantity and capacity, and they should be easy to transport, to empty, and to clean. There are many types and forms of containers. When choosing a system of containers, important considerations are whether containers should use plastic bag liners and whether they need to have lids.
The simplest system of school waste management is collecting all wastes in only onetype of container. If your School engages in recycling or composting, you will need 2 or more different types of containers for separate collection that have to be clearly marked (and if possible color‐coded). Typical examples of separate collection are a 2‐bin system (compostable – residual) or a 3‐bin system (residual – paper – bottles). Consider that separation of wastes aftercollection is more difficult and often dangerous or un‐hygienic, so if you decide to compost or recycle it is better to start with a separate collection right from the beginning.
